Fabric that Can't be Pinned

Many fabrics will retain pin holes if it is pinned. Leather is the most common fabric that people think of that can't be pinned but many others will maintain pin holes after the pins are removed. There are ways to control the fabric without pinning it together.

• Use paper clips and remove them as you approach the sewing machine presser foot.
• Use glue stick in the seam allowance. Always test that the glue will not bleed through the fabric before using it on your garment.
• Use one of the many temporary basting sprays available. Always use these sprays in a well ventilated area and read all of the directions on the can.
• Hand baste areas before machine sewing. Hand basting will give you slower control over the fabric than machine sewing.
• Consider fabric glue or rubber cement on areas such as hems that any stitching will show.
